HAYDN, MOZART – CARTELLIERI!
The year 2027 opens with a concert by the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by György Vashegyi. The evening promises musical delight for Debrecen’s discerning audience, featuring works by two Viennese masters and a lesser-known contemporary. The program begins with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Symphony in C major, K. 338, a rarely performed piece. It then moves to Mozart’s popular Concerto in C major for Flute and Harp, composed during his Paris visit at the request of a family, and now a staple for both instruments. After intermission, the mood shifts to the more intense C minor with Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 52, which reveals unexpected depth beneath his usual wit. The concert concludes with Antonio Casimir Cartellieri’s Symphony in E-flat major, a work by a nearly forgotten contemporary of Beethoven with ties to Vienna. Cartellieri, son of an Italian and a Lithuanian-German opera singer, was born in Poland and wrote numerous operas, symphonies, and vocal and orchestral pieces. Thanks to Vashegyi and the Orfeo Orchestra, Hungarian audiences are rediscovering his music.
